A semi religious Victorian ballad, written in 1892. This version was recorded in 1935. The music was written by Michael Maybrick, brother of James Maybrick who has been named, almost certainly falsely, as Jack the Ripper. He was, though, certainly murdered by his American wife.

Perhaps the definitive interpretation. I heard this on BBC Radio while on vacation, deep in the English countryside, about 45 years ago and incorrectly assumed that Richard Crooks was British on account of his "Mid-Atlantic" pronunciation.

Sublime, and on this Easter Sunday 2014. (One of my favorite hymns.)

Wikipedia says that Richard Crooks was an American tenor, but listening to the way he pronounces words in this song, he sounds much more like an Irishman. Anyone know why that would be the case?

When leaving the house, James left the note: "The Jack's ripper" and put it on the dead body. This story is pretty long, but the end is that James confessed everything and received forgiveness for everything he did. He did not kill anyone in common sense, but he argued victims to their deaths.

Later the two got married, they had two children. One of them was named Jack, another was Madelen. Jack had a habit of showing how cool he was. One day Jack's sister was at home and saw her father beating Jack to death. What actually happened was that their neighbor, who saw James leaving with his wife, wore the same clothes as James's and murdered Jack. Madelen got it right, and when James and his wife returned, told everything to him. James argued with a neighbor, and the neighbor died.

Jack the Ripper's real name was James Arnold von Stotts. He was born in Germany in 1873 from English mother and German father. At the age of 16, when his parents died in railroad accident, he was adopted by his mother's sister, who 2 years later brought him to London. Because of financial scrutiny, James began to steal at the age of 20. Later he was friends with a woman of his age, they had to get married. But the woman's stepfather didn't want them to, and James argued with him till a man died.

P.S. Sorry for calling it a hymn when it isn't really a hymn :-)

@hawkmoon03111951 Yes - it certainly is a fascinating story. All the best :-)

@peecee1384 I'm pleased that you enjoyed it. Jack the Ripper is an enigma though. We all have our different candidates, mine being Montague John Druitt, but I don't expect we will ever know for certain. In fact, it is the 'not knowing' that really keeps the story alive.

Thanks for allowing me to hear this beautiful hymn written by Michael Maybrick. I have to take issue with you about his brother, though. In my opinion James most certainly was Jack. His american wife was acquitted, I believe. Perhaps Michael did it to protect his own reputation! From what I've read, Florence had no idea what was going on.
