I have three favorite female vocalists Maddy Prior, Sandy Denny, and Kirsty MacColl, I would not like to choose between them.

One of my all-time favourites. This version always reminds me of poor Lou Nolan…Mind, the Old Blind Dogs do a version truer to the earliest texts, in which the cause of death (the pox/syphilis) is apparent: it's called 'Pills o' White Mercury'… It was called 'The Unfortunate Rake' in early versions.US versions include 'Streets of Laredo' and 'St James Infirmary Blues'.

Maybe the arrangement drags a little in the middle but one of Steeleye's best with the brilliant Maddy Prior as clear and beautiful as plate glass. Fab harmonies at end. Love it.

Lift me up - when I'm fallingLift me up - I'm weak and I'm dyingLift me up - I need you to hold meLift me up - keep me from drowning againCalm the storm that drench my eyesDry the streams still flowingCast down all the waves of sinAnd guilt that overthrow me

Downpour on my soulSplashing in the ocean, I'm losing controlDark sky all around I can't feel my feet touching the groundBut if I can't swim after fourth days And my mind is crushed by the thrashing wavesLift me up so high that I cannot fallLift me up

Are you a conservative or liberal test question? (A) Patty Hearst was a willing participant in the Symbionese Liberation Army or: (B) She suffered from " Stockholm Syndrome" (B) I'm a liberal!

This is the steeleye span I watched so many times, a lot of them at the old Cambrifge festival - small then and I as I prefer to remember Cherry Hinton. The best times were when Martin Carthy was the leading light for me. He understands the genre and produces a wonderrful and genuinely heartfelt rendering of the music every time I see him.
