Steeleye Span is what English folk rock was meant to sound like, more so than Fairport Convention. Yeah I said it.

Actually, it's not at all. It's pointing out that the jingoistic cant as you put it runs out when ex-soldiers need homes and jobs. It turns round the "queen and country" thing and throws it back.

Considering it's a late 19th Century song (written for the agricultural workers union) it would be odd to have a 17th Century arrangement :-D Anyway, you make a valid point ...

I listened to this song and thought she had lost it for sure, but there are others where she is still in form. This is just horrible and not in her range.

Dear Lord, this is terrible! I know the original tune and kept thinking, "What is this???"

Ummm...thought I'd love this but an English swing version just doesn't do it, and rips the guts out of the original (bloody brilliant) song. It's O.K. but no more than that.

This "Grand Ole Opry" style doesn't do it for me at all. Totally detracts from the originality of this fine old English folk song. Yuk!

Another great prog. rock band who try to sound like folk and are particularly good for people who are drunk all the time. A bit like Floyd and cannabis but booze instead. Try it if you don't believe me.
