Hey, "56",..."became a hit BECAUSE it was performed by a white group"???? Are you serious? There were a TON of black performers having hits in '67 when the SIX did it... or "75 when GFR released their version!!!!

Heard this first on Americal Forces Network (AFN) back in the 60's, late at night laying in bed in the UK. loved it then, love it now, cherished copy in my collection. B side excellent two. Sound just jogs along makes you wanna shuffle those feet KTF

I used to hear this all the time on CKLW in Windsor, Canada. We could pull that station in all the way in my hometown of South Bend, In. This song is just the best!

This is why I love Youtube. I always assumed that GFR covered this song but never knew about the Soul Brothers Six. Thank you for posting.

Can I get a witness ..... Joss Stone´s done a beautiful cover of this .. which is, unlike Grabd Funk, some thing like a new song

I never liked this song until I heard this version, which is incidentally the original. There's just so much more rhythm and soul in this version than I've heard in any other. These guys owe a lot to the bands that have covered them, but not nearly as much as they themselves are owed. If the internet is good for anything, it's for being able to find gems like these, and being able to appreciate a piece of history and art.

I never had that idea as well before, that doesn't exclude the fact that GFR still is a great rockband!(who had a lot of other great songs!)

John Ellison cut an album in the late 90s or early 2000s.... I played it like crazy when I was doing blues radio in South Jersey and in clubs......

So glad you liked it... and glad to have introduced this great song to you ;o) It was my favorite song in '67... and I always thought it was a top 10 song. I was shocked when it only reached #91 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts.

I had no idea. I'm actually ashamed of myself for never having heard the "Soul Brothers Six" and even more ashamed that I didn't know this was their original song! I'll be listening to everything I can find by them now. I've been a DJ since 1978 (mostly clubs) and I am smacking myself right now!!!! I will NEVER play the Grand Funk version again! And will be forwarding this to every DJ I know! Thanks for posting this! And thanks John Ellison for writing such a great song. So much truth!
