This is Sissel's version of the traditional Maori love song Pokarekare Ana - with both Maori and Norwegian lyrics! Its from her beautiful album Soria Moria.

I got the picture from The Sissel Website: www.sissel.cc

Here's an English translation of the lyrics. The translation of the Maori lyrics comes from Hayley Westenra's Pure-booklet and the Norwegian translation was made by enokmn.

Pokare ana x 4

/?/

Nga wai o

/Of restless/

Nga wai o Waiapu

/Of restless Waiapu/

Pokarekare ana

/Stormy are the waters/

Nga wai o Waiapu

/Of restless Waiapu/

Er en gammel sang fra havet

/Is an old song from the sea/

Gjennom sangen synger du

/Through the song you sing/

Som en sol i Wanganui

/Like a sun in Wanganui/

Smiler sommeren til meg

/The summer is smiling at me/

På en reise over havet

/On a journey over the sea/

Fikk jeg tonene av deg

/I got the notes from you/

E hine e

/Oh girl/

Hoki maira

/Come back to me/

Kamate au

/I could die/

I te aroha e

/Of love for you/

Pokare ana...

Du har gitt meg varme sanger

/You have given me warm songs/

Jeg vil synge dem for deg

/I want to sing them for you/

Hvis du lengter ut mot havet

/If you're longing for the sea/

Kan du kanskje høre meg

/You might hear me/

E hine e...

Pokarekare ana

/Stormy are the waters/

Nga wai o Waiapu

/Of restless Waiapu/

Er en sommerdrøm fra havet

/Is a summer dream from the sea/

Gjennom drømmen lever du

/Through the dream you live/

E hine e x2

Pokare ana...

Enjoy!

LIKE MOST BEAUTIFUL SONGS INCLUDING OPERAS ETC THEY ARE SUNG IN ALL LANGUAGES AND ARE LOVED AND APPRECIATED .. IN ALL LANGUAGES JUST DEPENDS ON YOUR LIKES AND DISLIKES I FIND THIS BEAUTIFUL AS THE WOMAN HERSELF IS ... ITS EASY TO LISTEN TO A BEAUTIFUL SONG EVEN WHEN YOU CANT UNDERSTAND THE LANGUAGE IF ITS SUNG BY A PROFESSIONAL .. BEAUTIFLLY DONE SISSEL :)

Personally i dont like this version as i believe it should ONLY be sung in the language to which it was intended to be sung. I do however think this woman has a beautiful voice. Is she a crossover opera singer?

@georgie1 I respect Kiri as an opera singer but not (for reasons too complicated to go into here) as a person. I think a lot of operas feature great music, but I don't accept it follows from that that opera vocalism is the standard by which all singers should be judged. Dame Malvina Major said comparing Kiri and Hayley was like comparing a rugby player with a cricket player. I agree. Why can't we just enjoy the music without all this silly squabbling?

@georgie1 I am reacting -- perhaps overeacting -- to what I believe is the snobbishness and outright absurdity of what someone called the "opera police" -- those who rubbish anything but opera and carry out vendettas full of lies and hatred against harmless crossover singers. Kiri said on a video here that her signature tune was "Pokarekare Ana" but you have a point perhaps, that she is better known for and more properly known for O Mio...

I have to say, stop ruining a wonderful song! Hayley Westenra's version is heaps better. The choir and the stupid beat in the background ruins it all. I recon it would be much better just with her voice.

Not trying to be rude... and with all my respect but for me the best one is Dame Kiri cause when you sing something you need to be able to give the person is listening to you all the emotions the song has. by the way... this is a love but still sad song, and should be sang as they made

And the chorus is I think: E hine e, hoki mai ra ! Ka mate ahau i te aroha, e ! But there are many variants. I see that the translation of the Norwegian bits justifies Sissel's style. This, in a way, is more Sissel's tribute to Pokarekare Ana than just another version of it. I shouldn't have been as critical of her as I was.

Second bit: Du har gitt meg varme sanger, jeg vil synge dem for deg. Hvis du lengter ut mot havet kan du kanskje høre meg. Er en sommerdrøm fra havet Gjennom drømmen lever du.
