"At the Zoo" was one of Simon's and Garfunkel's single releases in 1967.

The song is one of Paul Simon's many tributes to his hometown of New York City. The narrative tells the story of a trip to the Central Park Zoo, perhaps under the influence of drugs; when the singer reaches the zoo, he anthropomorphizes the animals in various amusing ways, with a resulting cynical eye towards human life. Such statements as "elephants are kindly, but they're dumb," "antelopes are missionaries" and "pigeons plot in secrecy" reflect more about man than they do about the menagerie. The song was licensed in advertisements for the Bronx Zoo in the late 1970s.

When the lyrics were adapted into a children's novel, the line "The Zookeeper is very fond of rum" was retained. But the image showed the zookeeper patting a happy money on the head. The monkey wore a collar with his name "Rum" on it.

I particularly love the fact that Paul's voice rarely rises above whisper... when he want to, that is.

Well, yes, elephants in the wild and in zoos (but less so since they have less room for maneuver) are extremely intelligent. However, those in the Republican Party ... well, you know that Paul Simon was impeccably prescient in his put down.

'Pigeons plot in secrecy, and hamsters turn on frequently'On this day in 1967 {March 12th} "At the Zoo" by Simon and Garfunkel entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart at position #89; and six weeks later on April 23rd, 1967 it peaked at #16 {for 2 weeks} and spent 9 weeks on the To 100...Between 1957 and 1982 the NYC duo had eighteen* Top 100 records; eight made the Top 10 with three reaching #1, "The Sounds of Silence" for 2 weeks in 1965, "Mrs. Robinson" for 3 weeks in 1968, and "Bridge Over Trouble Water" for 6 weeks in 1970...They just missed having a ninth Top 10 record when “Scarborough Fair/Canticle" peaked at #11 in 1968...* Their first charted record was under the name Tom and Jerry; "Hey! Schoolgirl" peaked at #49 on Billboard's Best Sellers in Stores chart on December 22nd, 1957…

Actually elephants are very smart animals. It still doesn't change the fact that Simon and Garfunkel are amazing,

My family all loved Simon and Garfunkel. It was one of the few things we all agreed on. RIP, Dad and brother John.

I used to sing this to the kids when they were little. When we get to the zookeeper I always do an Eric Morecambe raised-arm-disguising-the-upturned-bottle thing. Not sure the kids have ever worked out why :-)
