Chicago singer Chaka Khan joined local funk band "Ask Rufus" in 1972 when she replaced her close friend Paulette McWilliams in the band. They dropped "Ask" after recording their second album and became simply "Rufus".

They released "Sweet Thing" in 1975. It made the #1 spot on the Hot Soul singles chart and a hugely impressive #5 in the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
