Rock Bottom, Robert Wyatt (1974)

"His private persona erupted on Rock Bottom (1974), one of rock music's supreme masterpieces, a veritable transfiguration of both rock and jazz. Its pieces straddle the unlikely border between an intense religious hymn and a childish nursery rhyme. Along that imaginary line, Wyatt carved a deep trench of emotional outpouring, where happiness, sorrow, faith and resignation found a metaphysical unity. The astounding originality of that masterpiece, and its well-crafted flow of consciousness, were never matched by Wyatt's later releases." -Piero Scaruffi on Rock Bottom

The most fantastic album ever made by Robert Wyatt, it throws shadows on all the rest of his production....

I'm quite thankful for critics like Piero Scaruffi. I understand that music is more than just a science and that just because a song is a little formulaic doesn't mean it sucks, but he really has introduced me to a variety of artists that I probably wouldn't have known much about without him. The best art critics are usually the ones who can make you approach an art in a partly different way than before; he has done that with me.

I don't know why but this touches me so deeply. I must say it's one of the most beautiful and emotional songs I've ever heard, it makes me cry... Thank you Robert Wyatt!

Rock Bottom was the second record I ever bought (after Mike Oldfield's "Tubular Bells") back in 1974. God, I was a pretentious little twat in those days. But undoubtedly it has aged very well indeed, and I still listen to it regularly. From day 1 it was obvious (to me) that Alifib/Alifie was the key track on the album. When my daughter was a baby, she used to cry every time the track came on. Later, she'd beg me not to play 'That mad music'. I still did, though.

you missed my point. don't arguing about bands or musical genres here. i referred to the sense of the music, which you said is just a bubble-gum for the brain, mere entertainment and nothing more. and if you came out to this conclusion after listening millions of songs is more than sad. i just wanted to underline that music, at least in my case, is much, much more than this. but if the bubble-gum is a subtle metaphor for an entire universe, (which i doubt), i must apologizes to you.

I own and have listened to hundreds of thousands of albums in every musical genre you can possbibly think of, from Varese, Cage, Stravinsky, Zappa, Beefheart to Bach, Mozart, to The Beatles, The Stones, ELP, Yes, Tull, to Radiohead, Pearl Jam, OSI, and many thousands more. All I'm saying is that musical taste is a personal thing. Everyone looks for different things in the music they listen to. Arguing about which bands are great and which ones suck is a moronic waste of time.

you say that just because you are only to the lowest level in considering music: the entertainment one (some nice sounds jiggling there) not even to a low level as emotional-nebulous one. In your case for an affective-intellectual level, let's say, you should listen much more. Only then you may be near to understand what music is really about.
