The song "Arctic Crypt" by Nocturnus (a damn good band of old-school death metal) from the album THRESHOLDS (1992).

yeah nocturnus is one of the best super heavy bands ever, very very talented guys... I dunno why but after listening a lot of jungle rot recently I came back to my favorite nocturnus album, thresholds, can't stop listening to it since... I dunno, my high school years? a looooong time ago man :)

You will break my face, but for me Nocturnus is far superior than even Death, Morbid Angel, Autopsy combined.

I want to see an epic 80s style mech-anime battle to an instrumental version of this song.

I've always considered this band to have some of the best guitar work I've ever heard.

First death metal band using a keyboard. That was actually quite a leap at that time.

Sorry for that, I may have lost the thread of the original conversation, it's been some time. No, I do not think they are completely unoriginal. I just don't think they are particularly outstanding in any sense. If someone may directly point it out to me and help me see it, I'd be glad. Otherwise, I am also glad to go on talking about why this band isn't anything special.

(pt. 4) I would be fine to seldom use the term progressive though. I’d rather just call this a solid album. Its a great balance of the feel of classic metal and newer elements as opposed to band trying to be very progressive like Cynic or Atheist (Elements).

(pt. 3) The melodic lines that a lot of the riffs are built upon are far from cliched death or thrash riffing, even though they do cling to their roots. I’d say this album is musically ambitious and sounds more mature than the unoriginal bands at the time, which is why its commonly labeled as progressive.

(pt. 2) Personally, I would actually say Nocturnus is relatively progressive by the “misused” and real definition. There are of course aspects which are not progressive at all. As I stated originally, the idea of the album is unique. It is a progression of death/thrash because it incorporates a more musical and nerdy approach to a hard fronted and amateur genre. They were also pretty much the first band of that style to use keys as often as they do.

(pt.1) You’ve directed me on a tangent. I only said progressive for genre descriptive purposes as the evolved definition of progressive is commonly applied to bands similar in nature to Nocturnus. How exactly, is Nocturnus quite unoriginal? Are you implying that Nocturnus is entirely a copycat of a band?

1. This is not really progressive, but I understand that the term is widely misused nowadays. 2. How exactly, within this wrong paradigm, is this progressive? The songs has very little development and are actually quite repetitive and are just flooded with lots of guitar solos. PS. I do like guitar solos, but I also personally do not like their solos at all. Not because of how they sound alone, but because they feel out of place.

eh.. While there are aspects which are somewhat cliched, the whole idea of the album is pretty undone. For some reason there aren't too many space themed progressive death/thrash bands like Nocturnus. This is very balanced and mature release. His shreds are probably just him having fun wanking and shit, but some of the riffs in this album are unheard of in my opinion.
