I think Dave Grohl acted as the glue for Nirvana. Musically and otherwise. They were already a good band, with good songs, but musically they lacked that extra glue that a solid drummer provides. Also Dave was wise enough to keep things simple and serve the songs and not try to show off. With Krist's hooky basslines and Kurt's catchy songwriting, inventive guitar playing and amazing voice, they had the perfect storm.9 years ago
