frederick douglas, the first black person in congress, confronted stephen foster for his characterizations of blacks as menial half wits in his music with such material as old black joe. foster was horrified his music had this effect and his response was to write this song

Am I the only one that thinks Lebron James and Paul Robeson have to be related somehow?

My Kentucky Home by Stephen FosterRemember! This is an abolitionist ballad written by a Kentuckian. And performed here perfectly by Paul Robeson

Notice he sings the original lyrics, using "darkies" in two places in this recording. He is noted for having changed the lyrics of Old Man River in several places to match his social views.

What a great voice! If there's a better version of this song, I'd like to hear it. As for the appropriateness of the word "darkies", I can see both sides, although I don't claim to fully understand both sides.

@eliezer.... Good to learn something of the history of this song. Have had a love of Stephen Foster's songs since i played them on the piano as a child during family musical evenings.

Actually, "My Old Kentucky Home" is a minstrel song written by Stephen Foster 1852. It was published as "My Old Kentucky Home, Good Night" in January 1853 by Firth, Pond, & Co. of New York. The song was introduced by Christy's Minstrels the same year. The original sketch of this song, dating from 1852, substitutes "Poor Uncle Tom" for "My Old Kentucky Home" and aligns Foster's sympathies with the Abolitionist movement, based on his reading "Uncle Tom's Cabin".
