To: geebeeman1--I forgot to mention that the Angel also represents the fond, lost (or separated) girl the singer pines for."What a Great Sentiment,        What a Great Song."I think you must be an Angel too.

The Angel referred to in the song (and the book) is a statue of an Angel in the public square in Thomas Wolfe's hometown. After he wrote the book many of the citizens resented him because they saw (or thought they saw) unflattering portraits of themselves. He later wrote another book called "You Can't Go Home Again," which I read (and which was great). The aforementioned "Look Homeward Angel" (his first novel which brought him unprecedented acclaim from all the people who counted in the 1940's) I tried to read but it was too arcane at establishing a past history for his fictional (but real) home town.I loved this song because it was a "closer" song in the 60's of preteen last dance moves. Later on this song-in being the Midwest, specifically Grosse Isle Michigan-[see the pictures on the internet, especially of Sacred Heart Catholic Church on East River Road] was replaced by the Moody Blues "Nights in White Satin." But listen to "Go Now" by the Moody Blues and "Here Comes the Night" by Them (featuring an early Van Morison.)

I love this song, and this version! But what does it mean: Look Homeward Angel? (And no, I haven't read Thomas Wolfe's book Look Homeward Angel!)

I remember this song. Nicely sung with some unusual lyrics for the teenage market. Johnny Ray did a version of this, I think before The Monarchs.

This one brings back great memories. I used to have the 45 back in the mid-60s but thought it was an older song back then. It's a bit of a throwback (in a good way!) to late 50s-early 60s doowop.
