Mitch Ryder has a great voice , but I'll take the original version over any of the covers I've heard.

No question, Mitch Ryder's cover of the Prince original is the BOMB. Paired with the Squaw Valley ski montage for the 80's b-roll gem "Hot Dog - The Movie" this is possibly one of the best Prince re-dos ever made. Mitch just takes this song and makes it his -- melody, tempo, character, it's 100% HIS song. Thanks Prince, but when I think "When You Were Mine" it's all about Mitch. Sweet!

P.S. The CD of "Never Kick a Sleeping Dog" is available online...finally! It was released sometime in 2012, apparently, and there are new copies available now in 2014, shipped either from overseas or North Carolina. A long wait, but now the vinyl can be framed and put on the wall, because the CD is here at last.

Go Billy Levise, Jr.! From wikipedia: Born in 1945 and noted on allmusic.com as the "unsung hero of Michigan rock n' roll" William S. Levise, Jr. professionally known as Mitch Ryder appeared fronting a band named Billy Lee & The Rivieras, which had limited success until they met songwriter / record producer Bob Crewe.[3] Crewe renamed the group Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels, and they recorded several hit records for his DynoVoice Records and New Voice labels in the mid to late 1960s, most notably "Devil with a Blue Dress On", their highest-charting single at number 4, as well as "Sock It to Me-Baby!", a number 6 hit in 1967, and "Jenny Take a Ride!", which reached number 10 in 1965. The Detroit Wheels were John Badanjek on drums, Joe Kubert (not to be confused with the comic book illustrator of the same name) on rhythm guitar, Jim McCarty (not to be confused with the Yardbirds drummer of the same name) on lead guitar and Jim McAllister on bass...February 14, 2012 Ryder released his first album in 30 years, The Promise.

A Detroit Legend for sure. I loved him the minute I heard Jenny Take A Ride. Got to see him in a small, intimate setting. He has the coolest, grittiest voice and The Wheels, what a great band.

cont...Anyway, would love for someone to post "B.I.G. T.I.M.E." and "A Thrill's a Thrill." These songs take me back to a good place. Seems like a million years ago, and also like yesterday...

I saw him at a bar in Southern IN all those yrs. ago. He was touring for "Never Kick a Sleeping Dog." I bought the album immediately after hearing "When You Were Mine." After I heard on the radio that he was coming to The Little Apple, my boyfriend surprised me with tickets. Stupid me didn't take my camera...:-( and was too shy to even ask him to sign my album...Would be all over him today though...LOL. Still and always will have my shirt from that night.

His voice has aged as gracefully as that '65 Cadillac in the 1983 video.
