Saw Magazine in London in 1979, and they were note perfect. They made four fantasticalbums which should have been massive hits, but never achieved the sales. After the late great John McGeoch left the group, they were never the same. I had forgotten how menacing this track was, but it hasn't dated in over three decades. As for John McGeoch, he was a class act who departed far too early.

One of the most creative tracks ever laid down on vinyl. Magazine with Howard DeVoto had a very unique signature sound. No one today in rock does this. The voice is distinctly DeVoto, the drums, guitars, the haunting sound and outrageously good lyrics -- few bands get it all wrapped up tight like this. Wire is another with Colin Newman -- their "I Should Have Known Better" from 154 is incredible & so is their earlier "Dot Dash," rocker. Teardrop Explodes with Julian Cope had "The Great Dominions" -- equally haunting from this same era. Only the latter day Pere Ubu with David Thomas' "Breathe" continued in this vein. This was such compelling music for its time.

Adamson's bass is pulsating, almost sleazy at times. Totally underpins the song intent and lets McGeoch do his thing...

Ok, I didn't really think you were an artist, i was only ironic. Actually John McGeoch went to art-school too, and it's not Glenn Brown's fault to become successful, he still contributes to the reputation of post -punk in his works. I don't think that liking Magazine is a social thing - most of the members were middle class, so what. (Hirst came from working class, for that matters- but I think it doesn't....)

the negative votes - therein lies your answer. Glenn Brown is a VERY rich "child of blair". I didn't go to university. Council House irish immigrant stock me, and VERY PROUD of that. I would love to have a materially better off life mate - who wouldn't. Maybe one day I will. The middle class into which Brown was born into think they would give their right arm to have had my lifetime experience. But sadly they secretly love their comfortable privileged world. Magazine and their work speak to me.

Why is that hatred against Glenn Brown here ? Are you a Goldsmith's dropout, leading an unsuccessful artistic career or what - actually Brown has to do with melancholy and post-punk, eg. Joy Division: check out his paintings, the titles and the references - you'll see, hopefully. Try again mate. Cheers. László from Hungary

It's a good enough song, but there were far more interesting things happening in post-punk at that time with bands like This Heat and Wire. Also plenty of people are writing wonderful music at this time... you just have to dig for it. Magazine is revered today due to age of their releases, and I'm sure some composers and bands of today will have the same recognition after a decade or so has passed.

don't disagree. I felt I had really "arrived" in the exclusive club that only plays proper art when I bought this in the Record shop on Clapham Common as a shy 12 year old, about to turn 13, and the woman who sold it to me said she loved the cover artwork. Would have been December 1979.

Nice, safe, conformist, establishment arse licking artist, masquerading as "real" a la Hirst and Emin. Try again mate.
