Kathy Kirby (born Kathleen O'Rourke; 20 October 1938 -- 19 May 2011) was an English singer who was reportedly the highest-paid female singer of her generation.she is best known for her cover version of Doris Day's "Secret Love" and for representing the United Kingdom in the 1965 Eurovision Song Contest, where she came in second place. Her physical appearance often drew comparisons with Marilyn Monroe. She peaked in popularity in the 1960s.

Kirby became one of the biggest stars of the early to mid 1960s, appearing in the Royal Command Variety Performance and three television series for BBC TV. She represented the United Kingdom in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1965, and came second with the song "I Belong". Author and historian John Kennedy O'Connor describes Kirby's "I Belong" as being far more representative of current musical tastes than other songs from the contest, but she was beaten by France Gall from Luxembourg, singing an even more contemporary song written by Serge Gainsbourg - Channel 4 show 'UNFORGETTABLE' from 1983

I have read Kathys biography and at one point she was homeless, the only person from her era to offer her help was Sandie Shaw who stood by her

I met Kathy in 1972 in the Holloway road branch of Frisbey shoes, I had the great honour of serving such beautiful Lady, who sadly seemed forgotten by mainstream pop, I treated her as if she was visiting royalty in our little shop, I sold her a pair of shoes which was not quite so fashionable at that time, ( not platforms ) told her that I had listened to her sing for a long time, she seemed a bit overwhelmed by that, and thanked me for my kindness, I later learned that she was ill at that time, I am glad that I treated her with the respect and courtesy she so richly deserved, lovely woman, lovely voice

I LOVED her when I was a schoolboy - I now realise that she's responsble for my fatal addiction to big-busted blondes!

never had a crush on her until now ;-) , but did with her vocals and the way she could hit those high notes , with this mega tune behind her and with a U.S.60s soul beat , what a shame it was never really followed up and to expose the blue-eyed soul vocals she really had !

its more that a pity that such talent was wasted by a manager who was selfish in what he wanted out of her at the start o her career, she really never got the breaks after that - but is still in my mind one of the greatest singers of the sixties and beautiful with it xx
