"The way I see it," he said,

"You just can't win it

Everybody's in it for their own gain

You can't please 'em all

There's always somebody calling you down

I do my best

And I do good business

There's a lot of people asking for my time

They're trying to get ahead

They're trying to be a good friend of mine."

"I was a free man in Paris

I felt unfettered and alive

There was nobody calling me up for favors

And no one's future to decide

You know I'd go back there tomorrow

But for the work I've taken on

Stoking the star maker machinery

Behind the popular song."

"I deal in dreamers

And telephone screamers

Lately I wonder what I do it for

If l had my way

I'd just walk through those doors

And wander

Down the Champs Elysées

Going café to cabaret

Thinking how I'll feel when I find

That very good friend of mine."

"I was a free man in Paris

I felt unfettered and alive

Nobody was calling me up for favors

No one's future to decide

You know I'd go back there tomorrow

But for the work I've taken on

Stoking the star maker machinery

Behind the popular song."

Joni is a category all her own,it seems ludicrous to attempt to put Joni in a public capsule and do a portrait of her via nostalgia on film. This is the magic of Joni avoiding the pop labels avoiding the dated whims that were merely a plague designed to freeze her in time .Her past is more like a poetic trail of Jazz firmly planted in the soil of her artistic affiliations with color. Clearing her own path like a surveyor with a transit cutting her own property lines through the hissing summer lines of time. Get well Joni . Gary Brumley

How do you you follow any of it? Metheny, Brecker, Mayes, Elias. It's just kind of an acceptance thing, be thankful it occurred and move on, open to the next offering.

Wow, I'm really getting into Joni Mitchell. What's happening to me, I'm suppose to be an arena hard rocker.Actually i got my hands on the prototype Roland unit she started using for her alternate tunings. She's unusual, and there's a lot more than you see on the surface.

As a young teen living with family in and around Paris during the earlier seventies this song touches my heart. 'Twas the last of my free man years...
