John McCormack singing Handel's Where'er You Walk for HMV (Victor) in 1936. He was past his prime but this performance was very highly regarded by critics at the time. Compare with the Tibbett version I posted yesterday. I guess I should also give Webster Booth a chance.

Fantastic quality of sound. Nobody I have found so far has done him so much justice. Thank you very much.

I think that's the best sound quality I've ever heard from a 78. Thanks so much for uploading1

The words for this masterpiece are attributed to Alexander Pope ....Pastorals/Summer..written 1704 according to FAMILIAR QUOTATIONS..JOHN BARTLETT..in my 15th edition.

In his youth, the young John McCormack (long before he was made a Papal Count) was known for his exquisite voice, but it wasn't before an old Dublin wifey approached him after a recital and said, "Sure'n ye've gut a luvly voice Mr. McCormack, but it would have been nice if you'd sung a song or two in English.", when in fact ALL his songs had been in English, that he worked on becoming known for his razor-sharp enunciation. Clearly he succeeded.

What a lovely quirky find of this most lovely Handel song on a 78 record. I love the singer's precise English enunciation and the way he 'musically wavers' through some of the sung phrases. And, the old record's crackles weren't at all distracting - in fact, adding to the whole charm.

WOW, that's superb quality! Is that an orthophonic reproducer?

Just short of superb. In his prime, McCormack set an extraordinarily high standard that he couldn't quite reach again at 52, although he came close. His extraordinary breath control has declined, and his production is now rather nasal on certain vowels, especially "ee" (as in "TREEEES" and "SEEEET"). Otherwise, most contemporary tenors would be happy to sing this piece as well --

A wonderful Irish Lilt makes this man so special, a lovely warmth not found these days, indeed a very Special Man sadly Missed.

Indeed, he was a recitalist by this point, however, I have had a compilation of his recordings in both eras, and, yes, there was more than just this. I wish I could find it again.

Huh? McCormack retired from the operatic stage nearly 10 years before electric recording was introduced and did not, to my knowledge, record any arias other than this electrically. I'm wondering if I am right.

No, actually, and, he was one of the few, like Gili, who was able to cross over from the acoustic to the electric recording age. Caruso would have made it if cancer had not taken him so early.

Artikulatorisch perfekt, stimmlich leider nur noch ein Abglanz. Trotzdem besten Dank für die Einbringung.
