I was brought up on McCormack from 2 years old, in both Canada and England. It was played on a wind up gramophone, It just brings back so many memories.

For Mary Corrigan, my great great grandmother, from County Mayo, born in 1799, and her husband, Patrick O'Boyle. From there twas Weldens (Meath) and McLaughlins (Cork) and Doyles (Wexford), and here I am today.

Cheers Martin and funny thing I have asked loads of older irish relatives and none of them knew either !

It's spelled 'chignon,' and commonly pronounced "sheenyon." It's device women use to roll up their hair into a bun at the back of the neck. It relates to the difference between such a woman and one who "lets her hair down." Another phrase in the song also puzzles many "the Grecian bend." This I believe relates to the bustle women used to wear above their posterior. For what reason they wore them I do not know.

I came across some papers, and found that this was my Grandfather's favorite song. My mother is 86, and we never met her father, because he died quite early, but it was a lovely connection to me, to hear this.

This is really good. Found it because I wanted to know who wrote "The Sick Note", which uses this melody. Great recording for the 1930's.

@happygael If so I'm impressed. My 88 year old mother doesn't even know what the Internet is.

@happygael Kind of hard to believe since his farewell tour of America was in 1937.
