(See Lyrics Below)

A campaign to register African American voters was launched during the Civil Rights Movement at the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in Birmingham by Martin Luther King, Ralph David Abernathy, and Fred Shutterworth. On September 15, the church was bombed killing four girls, who were attending Sunday school classes. The fight for the freedom to vote cost them their lives. Do not forget their sacrifice; get out and vote!

Birmingham Sunday (Lyrics)

Come round by my side and I'll sing you a song.

I'll sing it so softly, it'll do no one wrong.

On Birmingham Sunday the blood ran like wine,

And the choirs kept singing of Freedom.

That cold autumn morning no eyes saw the sun,

And Addie Mae Collins, her number was one.

At an old Baptist church there was no need to run.

And the choirs kept singing of Freedom,

The clouds they were grey and the autumn winds blew,

And Denise McNair brought the number to two.

The falcon of death was a creature they knew,

And the choirs kept singing of Freedom,

The church it was crowded, but no one could see

That Cynthia Wesley's dark number was three.

Her prayers and her feelings would shame you and me.

And the choirs kept singing of Freedom.

Young Carol Robertson entered the door

And the number her killers had given was four.

She asked for a blessing but asked for no more,

And the choirs kept singing of Freedom.

On Birmingham Sunday a noise shook the ground.

And people all over the earth turned around.

For no one recalled a more cowardly sound.

And the choirs kept singing of Freedom.

The men in the forest they once asked of me,

How many black berries grew in the Blue Sea.

And I asked them right back with a tear in my eye.

How many dark ships in the forest?

The Sunday has come and the Sunday has gone.

And I can't do much more than to sing you a song.

I'll sing it so softly, it'll do no one wrong.

And the choirs keep singing of Freedom.

The terrible news from S Carolina brought this to mind. Half a century has passed, but hate still festers in so many hearts. Listen and weep

Racially motivated murders and voting obstruction still continues in our nation.

Still going on. I remember the event. Almost two months to the day of JFK's assassination.

I can read here many people chocking about what happened during the 60's in USA, as if Joan and the others wouldn't have spoken loud enough. But as a European and most of all as a French I can tell you that I am shocked seeing 25% of the french voting population voted for those who committed those crimes! So can't we learn from our past? Shame on my country!

fine, but you don't blow up a church. i don't care if you don't like what they are preaching. there are just some things you don't do. these guys were so twisted by the idea of people wanting to be treated like citizens that they were willing to kill for it. did they plan to kill these 4 girls? no. they were trying to kill the movement. i know that.
