"My Letters" was the second of two extraordinary songs composed by Jeri Southern for her album 'The Southern Style' originally released in 1955 on the Brunswick label.

The other song was "I Don't Know Where To Turn".

Both these songs show just how good a songwriter Jeri was, a talent that was much underrated. Her smoky vocals and sophisticated piano playing were superb and the songs have quite deep musical and lyrical structures.

The album has been re-issued on MCA also contains Jeri's 1957 LP 'Prelude To A Kiss'. Essential listening.

Although this song is credited to Jeri Southern for the music, and Ray Hutchinson (her second husband), in fact the lyrics were written by Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Sonnets from the Portuguese 28. When asked why this was in a radio interview not long before her death, Jeri said she had no idea other than that the Decca record company executives felt that having the Barrett name would make the song appear too 'intellectual' for the public and might affect the sales of the album. A strange decision as, of all her albums, The Southern Style is probably the most esoteric and uncommercial.

Another beautiful song from Jeri! I love the lyrics, piano, and of course, her gorgeous voice. It's my good fortune to have heard this very talented lady!
