Ah, now i understand. I'm from Holland, so i didn't totally get that 'love is for the middle class' and that made the song sound a little strange. But thank you! =) I think it's very well written as well!

"If all I gave was love, would you give up on me?" The whole song is talking about whether love is enough to make him lovely to her, or if financial security necessary for their love. Hence, he's asking if "love is for the middle class," or in other words, only for the "financially secure." My personal favorite line is, "if you measure love in false securities / I owe you nothin' at all." Its a great song, and very well written!
