Ludwig patents a free-standing, spring-driven bass drum pedal. Although drummers have been experimenting with various foot-operated devices for decades, the Ludwig design is dependable, portable and helps establish the bass drum pedal as a permanent part of the drum set. Over 100 years later, Ludwig's basic pedal design is the one we still use.

In this 15-part series, Vic Firth and Daniel Glass will be looking at 100 years of drumming evolution. Learn about the key events and advancements that shaped the drumset we know and love today!

Try breaking down your pedals today. You'll use screws and parts all over the place! Wish more companies made collapsible pedals like the Sonor Perfect Pedal.

I think we all drummers should be thankful to Ludwig they really introduce the drums as we know it today... One of the most important inventions of the modern age

A photograph of a foot pedal from 1840?! Hate to nit pick, but that's very unlikely, that would make it one of the first photographs ever taken - and folks tended to make a big deal out of such things, being crazy expensive made portraits the norm, so any photo of such gizmo-curio like a bass pedal is probably 1850's at the earliest. Things got cheap enough by then that a very few could indulge in photos of snazzy curiosities. Still, an awesome doc!
