With the explosive popularity of Ragtime, drummers begin to improvise more freely with the rudiments. At the same time, record numbers of immigrants arrive into the United States from all over the world, bringing their ethnic instruments with them. Early drum set players adapt many of these "contraptions" into their basic set up, giving way to the term "traps." Trap drummers would play an important role in the evolution of Vaudeville, silent movies, and radio.

In this 15-part series, Vic Firth and Daniel Glass will be looking at 100 years of drumming evolution. Learn about the key events and advancements that shaped the drumset we know and love today!

So THAT'S where the term trap table came from. That has eluded me my entire percussive career.

I'd love to know who provided all those beautiful antique drum kits for this DVD ?

The closest I ever came to having one of those trap sets like in the pictures was when I played behind the curtain for an off-broadway musical called, "Nun-sense." I had to play a bell part so I had them balanced on my bass drum. I had a set of temple blocks to my right above my floor tom which was the only tom-tom. Then there was a table with a rachet, maracas, and vibraslap, and I mounted my cowbell and tamborine on a couple of cymbal stands that held a ride/crash and a crash. College was great!
