I cannot stress enough what a genius Hildegard Knef was!!!!! The diversity of her recorded music is astounding!!!! Not only was she beautiful, but she sang the widest range of music styles of any modern artist I can think of. Here is fantastically orchestrated number from the 70's. As to what the song is about, I cant really say.. the german to english translation sites I've plugged the lyrics into come back with some strange stuff....

It's referring to the 'Friedenskampf' which is the german word for a "fight for peace" and 'Schadenfreude' which is the german word for joy derived from pain or damage dealt to others. The interesting thing is that both these words are composed of two very opposed words. "Frieden"="Peace"; "Kampf=Fight"; "Schaden"="damage";"Freude"="joy/pleasure" So she sings that those two words (or things) met in some night and couldn't figure out which one of both is to be envied more for it's origin...13 years ago

@cojoification The lyrics are (not a lot for such a long song and quite repetitive) "Friedenskampf und Schadenfreude trafen sich auf einer Weide selten wurde so gelacht wie in jener Nacht Keiner wusste von den beiden, wen am meisten zu beneiden und warum und wie sie wohl zu ihren Namen kamen. Du heisst Kampf und vorne Frieden, mir ist Freud' und Schad' beschieden Selten wurde so gelacht wie in jener Nacht" It's a play on words that is in fact hard to translate.13 years ago
