The original, by the writer Hank Ballard, is soooooo much better and more soulful than Chubby Checker's offkey, whiny version, I can't even listen to the other one.

It IS good, but Chubby's version has more energy and is a little more uptempo. Hank's is a little more restrained...which hurts it compared to Chubby's. It almost drags in a couple of spots. Anyway Chubby's version is special to me in my life too so maybe I am prejudiced by his version being the "signature version". . My mom was a hell of a dancer but when my dad came back from ww2 and married her he did not dance so she did not dance and not dancing was one of the things she gave up being married to him. Fair trade but weddings and bar mitzvas always have music and dancing... finally in 1960 The Twist hits big and my dad seeing his brother doing it says I can do that! come on honey" and they danced! He COULD do it and he would expand that confidence into going out and trying to dance whenever they wanted. Thank you Chubby and Hank.

This be street ghetto wording of highest order. Dah real stuffs, get it fools? Hank Ballard be one bad dude, walking the walk and singing it for real. No homogenized pabulum. No pat Boone shit here. Approved in Detroit, 12th Street. Oh yah.

Chubby's has a lot more energy behind it. I gotta give Chubby my vote. This sounds more like Doo Wop. This one's okay, but Chubby's is much more rockin'.

On this day in 1960 {September 19th} "The Twist" by Chubby Checker peaked at #1 {for 1 week} on Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart... And on that very day Hank Ballard's original version of the song reached #28, he was the song's composer... Also on that day, "Twistin' U.S.A." by Danny and the Juniors entered the Top 100, eventually it would peak at #27... R.I.P. Mr. Ballard {1927 - 2003), Daniel 'Danny' Rapp {1941 - 1983), & Chubby Checker will celebrate his 72nd birthday next month on October 3rd

Fat chance. Sorry, couldn't pass up the straight line. I believe, actually, that Hank cleaned up on publishing royalties as the writer of The Twist.
