We Just Couldn't Say Goodbye

Words and Music by Harry Woods

Guy Lombardo and His Royal Canadians

Vocal refrain by Carmen Lombardo

Recorded July 27, 1932

Brunswick 6350

Harry Woods (1896 - 1970), the songwriter, was born in North Chelmsford, Massachusetts. He was a composer of many popular songs from the 1920s and 1930s including many for Hollywood musicals. Some of his best known are "Paddlin' Madelin Home", "I'm Looking Over a Four Leaf Clover", "River, Stay 'Way From My Door", "When the Red Red Robin Comes Bob-Bob-Bobbin' Along", "Side By Side", "When The Moon Comes Over the Mountain", "We Just Couldn't Say Good-Bye", and "Try A Little Tenderness". He wrote music and lyrics with many collaborators including Mort Dixon, Arthur Freed, Howard Johnson, Rube Bloom and Gus Kahn. He was educated at Harvard and played piano and was a vocalist while there and served in the Military during World War I.

In looking over my previous postings I discovered I now have nine that are credited to Harry Woods as lyricist, composer or both. I have made a playlist of these songs. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL561D2316A87D1B87

Thanks for the tip, I haven't seen the clip for years and Shirley's performance is delightful. By the way, her impersonation seems more of Dietrich in Blonde Venus. Shirley wears an arrow across the head like Dietrich when she sings Hot Vodoo in that movie.

I agree, Annette was the best. She sings the seldom heard verses and she always had the best accompaniment.

Great song and nice version. I think Annette Hanshaw did the best one.

Shirley does a very cute performance. It can be found on YT. Search "Kid 'N Hollywood"

The first version I've ever hear of this song was by Shirley Temple, disguises as Marlene Dietrich in Morocco. Definitely is a great song, here beautifully played by Lombardos. Thanks for sharing!

I like the Boswell's great rhythm in the second half. Sinatra did a nice version too in the late 1940s.

Trombonology Erstwhile

Splendid version -- love the Busse-esque trumpet. I think Shirley Temple, of all "vocalists," was the first person I heard singing this charmer -- in one of her pre-feature film short appearances. The Whiteman record with Mildred Bailey and the Boswells' treatment are excellent as well, as I'm sure you know.

Thanks! The Royal Canadians are one of my favorites too.

Carmen was probably the most talented member of the band, as a reed player, vocalist and song writer. The ASCAP website credits Carmen with 189 different song titles.

I had heard that Armstrong loved the sax sound of the Lombardos. I think Annette Hanshaw's rendition of this song is one of her best!

Magnific rendition of this Harry Woods tune by Lombardo's Royal Canadians. Louis Armstrong said that Lombardo's group was his favorite so he wanted for his own big band from 1929 to mid 1935 that the sax section must sound like Lombardo. The first version that i heard was by Annette Hanshaw. Thanks!
