@MIKEPORTNOYING well, you just described three bands I like :P FWIW being "trendy" in niche genres (like Progressive) is completely different than being trendy in mainstream music circles (where the term has meaning.) While hardcore prog fans sit here and say Dream Theater, Opeth, Mastodon (and I'll do you one better- the Mars Volta) are a bunch of pandering sellouts, most of the people they would supposedly be pandering to would just shake their heads and say "Who the hell are they?"
