"Great recordings of 100 years ago"
1910 was a great year for Victor/HMV in my opinion; both Caruso and McCormack made several of their all time greatest recordings that year. Since this is the year 2010, I am going to do a little series called 'Great recordings of 100 years ago,' where I try to post recordings that were recorded exactly 100 years ago to the day of my posting them. This is a 14 March 1910 Victor/HMV recording of the aria 'Studenti udite' from Alberto Franchetti's opera Germania (14 March 2010 was only a week ago). The opera premiered in 1902: Arturo Toscanini conducted and Caruso created the title role of Federico.
This is one of the finest recordings Caruso ever made, in my opinion. Listen to how passionately he delivers the vocal line, especially at the end! The voice is in its absolute prime, bright and lyrically beautiful, yet powerful and majestic, with overwhelming squillo throughout the range, especially on high notes. This recording has been posted before but my post is in better quality and I thought it would give a better idea of what I am talking about (you may also have to turn up the volume a little for better effect).
Trivia: according to Victor, this recording was Take 1, which means it was technically 'live'. So yes, there are 'live' Caruso recordings after all! In fact, about 75-80% of all his recordings were done in only 1 or 2 takes.
I will try to post more Caruso and McCormack recordings in the coming months.
