"Great recordings of 100 years ago"

1910 was a great year for Victor/HMV in my opinion; both Caruso and McCormack made several of their all time greatest recordings that year. Since this is the year 2010, I am going to do a little series called 'Great recordings of 100 years ago,' where I try to post recordings that were recorded exactly 100 years ago to the day of my posting them. This is a 14 March 1910 Victor/HMV recording of the Gioconda Act 2 aria 'Cielo e mar' (abridged version), sung by the great Enrico Caruso. 14 March 2010 was only a week ago.

Caruso made 3 recordings of this aria: in 1902, 1905, and 1910. This recording (the 1910) has been posted before but only in its 'remastered' form. My post is the original transfer. This shows Caruso's voice in its absolute prime, and he is stunning. Enjoy.

Trivia: according to Victor, this recording was Take 1, which means it was technically 'live'. So yes, there are 'live' Caruso recordings after all! In fact, about 75-80% of all his recordings were done in only 1 or 2 takes.

I will try to post more Caruso and McCormack recordings in the coming months.

ALL OF CARUSO'S RECORDINGS WERE "LIVE" THERE WERE NO MICROPHONES OR TAPE RECORDERS IN THOSE DAYS, AND NO "ELECTRONIC" RECORDINGS UNTIL THE EARLY 1920'S. ALL CARUSO'S RECORDINS WERE "DIRECT TO DISC" OR "DIRECT TO CYLINER" RECORDINGS !

Enrico Caruso was an empathetic genious. Whatever he sang, he "was" at the time he sang it. Unfortunately, we only have studio recordings, no live performances of this great artist/human being.

Have heard the 1905 version as well. For me there's a trade-off between the two versions that are 5 years apart. He sings with greater refinement in 1905 but his tone seems not as full as later on, whereas in this 1910 version his voice has obviously filled out and become darker, making it quite thrilling to hear, yet some of the refinement in the earlier version is gone.

There is something about his voice that intrigues me. Thanks for posting.

The very best singer of this aria.
