IF YOU ROLL CHOPIN, HANK WILLIAMS, AND JUDY GARLAND TOGETHER. YOU WOULD HAVE ELTON JOHN.....

He did a number of concerts at the (now defunct) Rainbow Theatre that month. I was fortunate enough to be in London the first week of May 1977, and went to the May 3rd show. What a fantastic venue it was!

EJ had such an innocence in his voice in the earlier days. Listening to this song also takes me back to the innocence I had when as a child I first listened to it. It's definitely such a sad kind of feeling but there's also this deep consolation there that makes me feel so alive. It's funny, we don't know what we are but songs can give us such an undeniable sense of being alive. Indeed, when we listen we know our lives couldn't possibly have been any other way.

It would be nice if we all could all live like the the lyrics in this song

Excellent... but nothing tops the original from 'Blue Moves', with Crosby/Nash harmonies bringing this song to the next level. 'Between 17 and 20', from aforementioned album, also one of my faves...

This song, along with Where's the Shoorah?, makes Blue Moves one of the greatest albums ever. Well, I consider a majority of his albums to be up there as well. :]

@TOMTHEBOMBER I also have always loved this song and Funeral for a Friend. They must have been tributes or paid homage to departed friends are people they knew in the music business. I remember buying his albums there is nobody else like him. He and Bernie had a collaboration like no other. My family never got it about his gift for music and him happening to be gay. His sexuality never mattered to me, it is his gift of song. Take Care. Debra

The Biography Channel Special detailed the loss of Elton's voice in 1986 while on tour in Australia. Shortly thereafter he underwent throat surgery, which permanently altered his voice. Several non-cancerous polyps were removed from his vocal cords, resulting in the loss of his famous falsetto. John continued recording prolifically, but years of cocaine and alcohol abuse, initiated in earnest around the time of Rock of the Westies' 1975 release, were taking their toll.

@seanevanmusic Something of which I am also keenly aware of.

@BigShotTony It has nothing to do with drugs. He had surgery on his voice in the 80's and lost a large part of his upper range.

@ashleyandel You also need to take into account that he had surgery in the 80's to remove nodules in his vocal chords and as a result, lost a lot of his upper range

This song is SO much better played live than the studio version of it! It's almost uncanny! ;o I love how his voice sounds here, and his rather mellow piano carries his feelings so right. I want to rate this at least 106 stars out of 5... .____.

It isn't just drugs that caused his voice to deteriorate, you know; you have to realize that he's been singing live for years and years and years, and giving his best for that duration. That guy still puts on a 2 hour plus set almost nightly at times.
