The word "voot" was for some reason popular among R&B musicians during the mid- to late 1940s, especially those musicians based in southern California. Here's "No Voot, No Boot" from 1945 by Dinah Washington with Lucky Thompson's All-Stars, released on the Apollo label.

Great to hear from you. I am aware of this bit of history of soprano sax. I might add not being a huge fan of soprano, Lucky is about the only one I truly like on that horn. His warm tone is a thing of beauty also he's always in tune... Yes, there are a lot more of LT available than previously. I used to pay an arm and two legs for his out of print records in New York.

vova47, you are most welcome. Eli ‘Lucky’ Thompson is among my all-time faves on tenor sax. But I especially love his soprano. He took it up before Coltrane; about that time Steve Lacy, too, emerged w/ his brand of ss. A lot of LT out there. Thanks to whiteray1, here is some uncommon Lucky - w/ The Queen of the Blues, to boot. Enjoy! :I:

Recorded in LA, CA, 10 DEC ‘45 w/ Karl George tp Jewel Grant as/ Gene Porter cl, as, bari/ Lucky Thompson ts/ Wilbert Baranco p/ Milt Jackson vib/ Charlie Mingus b/ Lee Young d/ Dinah Washington voc The other side of the 78 rpm is WISE WOMAN BLUES - but Lucky doesn’t solo on it - and 2 more sides came from this session. This same All Stars unit got in 8 more sides over the next few days. The Queen’s Jazz vocals on all 12 are matchless. And those LT solos, wow. Thank you! :I:
