,Unusually for the big Band era Dinah was turned down by Benny Goodman, and both Tommy & Jimmy Dorsey and went on to forge a successful solo career on Records, Radio, and Television.

Quoting Wikapedia:...

"In March 1939, Dinah debuted on national radio on the Sunday afternoon CBS radio program, Ben Bernie's Orchestra. In February 1940, Dinah Shore became a featured vocalist on the NBC Radio program The Chamber Music Society of Lower Basin Street, a showcase for traditional Dixieland and Blues songs. With Shore, the program became so popular that it was moved from 4:30 Sunday afternoon to a 9:00 Monday night time slot in September. In her prime-time debut for "the music of the Three Bs, Barrelhouse, Boogie-woogie and the Blues", she was introduced as "Mademoiselle Dinah 'Diva' Shore, who starts a fire by rubbing two notes together!"

Sooner Or Later

Words by Ray Gilbert

Music by Charles Wolcott

You and I said goodbye

With a friendly kiss

And though I'm not the surest kind,

I'm kinda sure of this:

Sooner or later you're gonna be comin' around, I'll betcha;

I'll betcha that I getcha, you wait and see.

Sooner or later you'll wanna be hangin' around, I'll letcha;

I'll betcha if I letcha, you'll baby me.

You're gonna knock on my door

(knock knock)

You did it before

(knock knock)

Matter o'factly I don't know exactly when.

But sooner or later you're gonna be comin' around and want my lovin' again.

I take no credit for the photos shown on this video

The sweetest of voices. Love them all from that era - Lee and Whiting and Stafford and Clooney. They all touch the heart. Hear her sing "Skylark" and fall in love.

Is that actually supposed to be Dinah in that twirling skirt scene? She was said to have a deformed leg from her childhood polio and always wore slacks or long dresses to hide it. The girl in that photo has shapely legs.

@trooper7h This song is from the Disney film (now, never seen) Song of the South. It was sung by James Baskett (who played Uncle Remus in the film) to the character of the cook, Aunt Tempy, played by the great Hattie McDaniel.

There aren't enough posts of Dinah. I've seen her in enough old movies on TCM to realize she was more than the woman on the 1970's talk show that I grew up with. Thank you!

angerredfire, Dinah not only overcame the rejection of the Band Leaders to find success... As a small child she overcame Polio - proving that she was a real fighter...Dinah rightly belongs in the Pantheon of great female singers of the 1940's 50's & 60's. Thank you for your interest and your comment.:) My Best wishes to you, trooper7h
