It's a great song, and Cash, Amanda and NIN are all great performers. Rare to have an original song and so many covers all so spectacular in their opwn right.

I thought Cash's was great actually. This song seems to gain a lot more gravitas when it's sung by an old man at the end of his life than when it's a guy in his late 20s.

Exactly right, At least not his alone. There are covers of a song, then there are pure reinventions of a song. Both these artists pour themselves out through the vehicle of this song. IT is now theirs as well.

the song comes straight from Trent Reznor soul but Amanda and Cash could relate so much with the lyric that in a sense they made the song their own. Trent even said that after watching Cashs music video the song wasn't his any more.

This song comes straight from the soul. That's why Amanda can tear your heart out with it, because she's welling up all her pain. That's why Johnny could tear your heart out at the end of his life losing the love of his life and confronting what it all meant and still having the artistic integrity to pour every remaining ounce of soul into that song. That's the measure of a masterpiece, and the masters that sing it.

it is sort of watered down, however the fact that it is coming from cash totally changes the song meaning for me, and i like that.

Ca c'est de la reprise... Ca m'a arraché des larmes, aussi bonne que l'original de Trent Reznor qui est déjà superbe !

i think she makes it her own. she has been throuh alot in her life and the feeling she expresses shows a deep connection to the meaning of the song. especially in the end. trent wrote a masterpiece and i would say that when it comes to covers amadas and cashs are the best ones out there. the most feeling especially since both trent, palmer and cash expressed the song in such a way as it being a reflection of their life and even though they might regret things those things are what made them.

well the majority of women don't have a deep enough voice to be able to sing the way Amanda can so

Yeah but he was also like, what?, 80 years old when he covered it. He died like a year later didn't he? How hardcore do you expect him to be preatty much on his death bed? I think the fact that he even loved the song enough to cover it, and knowing he was rocking out to NIN, is hardcore enough for me.

Indeed. I know Mr. Reznor was thrilled when Johnny Cash did it. I also know Kurt Cobain mentioned he loved that Tori Amos covered Smells like Teen Spirit and he got a big kick out of Weird Al's version too. Most artists, if they aren't total pos's, are honored by another's desire to cover their song.

I like the way Amanda does covers. They are not to show how cool she is; she does songs she likes. As a fellow songwriter, I love her choices they are all great songs. Great songs are their own justification
