Very Charlie Christian no? A dash of Bird too. Tasty.

Definitely the best $20 I have spent in a long time. I learned more from this "50 Licks" collection than I have from pretty much any other music instruction book (with the possible exception of Herb Ellis's three-book series, which was my introduction to jazz improvising). Tons of good stuff. It probably worked so well for me because I already had the theory in place and this just really helped show me how to implement it.

Thanks for posting. Your teaching method is great for players like me that have been playing rock and fusion for a long time but need to add more jazz into my playing.

This lick is actually from Lou Donaldson's (saxophonist) mid 60s album of the same name that had Benson on it as a sideman (also Dr. Lonnie Smith on B3!). If you search around, you'll find it out here on youtube. Cool to hear the lick in context, and--wow--it's a lot faster! David slowed it down a bit so all of us subgeniouses could grasp what's going on! This whole series of licks is just fantastic--Dave is THE man!

this is a great lick, but you make it end in the middle of the measure so without the harmony it feels wrong. Those last blues notes you added, complete the phrase.
