They hated it because it was not the Pumpkins, because it was again new, different, positive. Pumpkins went down the drain by evolving, creating new sounds, expressing different emotions. Look at Adore, at Machina... Then look at Zwan, then at Billy's solo album. He was searching.. Zeitgeits has average songs and pure masterpieces, it's again a transition. Teargarden and Oceania are pure proof of the fact that he re-found himself. But to answer your question, people fear the unknown. That's it.
