"You Keep Me Hangin' On" was a 1966 song originally recorded by The Supremes for the Motown label. The song became the group's eighth number-one single when it topped the Billboard Hot 100 pop singles chart for two weeks in the United States in November of 1966. Written and produced by Motown's main production/songwriting team of Holland--Dozier--Holland (H-D-H), the song's signature guitar part originated from a Morse code-like radio signal heard by Lamont Dozier, who collaborated with Brian and Eddie Holland to integrate the idea into a single. Many elements of the recording, including the guitars, the drums, and Diana Ross and Florence Ballard's vocals, were multi-tracked, a production technique which was established and popularized concurrently by H-D-H and other premier producers of the 1960s such as Phil Spector and George Martin. H-D-H recorded the song in nine sessions with The Supremes and session band The Funk Brothers before settling on a version deemed suitable for the final release. The track is one of the more often-covered songs in the Supremes canon, having since been recorded by numerous musicians such as Wilson Pickett, The Box Tops, Jackie DeShannon, Rod Stewart, The Chipmunks and The Chipettes, and the cast of the Fox television show "Glee", and most successfully by late-1960s rock band Vanilla Fudge, 1980s pop singer Kim Wilde, and 1990s country singer Reba McEntire. "You Keep Me Hangin' On" was the first single from The Supremes' 1967 album "The Supremes Sing Holland--Dozier--Holland" (issued internationally as "The Supremes Sing Motown"). As the title states, all songs on the album were written and produced by Holland--Dozier--Holland. Most of the album was recorded during the spring and summer of 1966. The Supremes, an American female singing group, were the premier act of Motown Records during the 1960s. Originally founded as The Primettes in Detroit, Michigan, in 1959, The Supremes' repertoire included doo-wop, pop, soul, Broadway show tunes, psychedelic soul, and disco. They were the most commercially successful of Motown's acts and are, to date, America's most successful vocal group with 12 number-one singles on the Billboard Hot 100. At their peak in the mid-1960s, The Supremes rivaled The Beatles in worldwide popularity, and their success made it possible for future African-American R&B and soul musicians to find mainstream success. Founding members Florence Ballard, Mary Wilson, Diana Ross, and Betty McGlown, all from the Brewster-Douglass public housing project in Detroit, formed The Primettes. Barbara Martin replaced McGlown in 1960, and the group signed with Motown the following year as The Supremes. Martin left the act in early 1962, and Ross, Ballard, and Wilson carried on as a trio. During the mid-1960s, The Supremes achieved mainstream success with Ross as lead singer. In 1967, Motown president Berry Gordy renamed the group Diana Ross & The Supremes, and replaced Ballard with Cindy Birdsong. Ross left to pursue a solo career in 1970 and was replaced by Jean Terrell, at which point the group's name reverted to The Supremes. After 1972, the lineup changed more frequently, with Lynda Laurence, Scherrie Payne, and Susaye Greene all becoming members of the group during the mid-1970s. The Supremes disbanded in 1977 after an 18-year run. The original version of "You Keep Me Hangin' On" was #339 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. This past summer my wife and I took the 9 hour ride from NJ to Detroit and stood exactly where the Supremes stood at the Motown Studio A where they recorded this and all of their GREAT songs. It was surreal to stand in the room where the MOTOWN SOUND was created.

It is amazing to realize that the big Motown sound came from a humble, cramped little studio in the Motor City. But, they had the highest concentration of talented writers, singers, musicians and producers in the history of the business, all in one company. It was literally a hit factory, in a city well-known for assembly-lines. Never before or since has this been approximated by another music enterprise.

Berry was the catalyst that made the wheels at Motown turn. Jamerson and the funk brothers were put together by Gordy, of the great tunes that we come to know as the Motown Sound and such great recordings there were 100's that were recorded that didnt make the grade... thanks to Berry
