XTC were a New Wave band from Swindon, England, active between 1976 and 2005. Though the band enjoyed some significant chart success, including the UK hits "Making Plans For Nigel" (1979) and "Senses Working Overtime" (1982), they are better known for their long-standing critical success than for making hit records.

1983 I was 11 years old and my alarm woke me up to this tune, this was my first day back to school after 6 wk holidays, I remember that thought I didn't wanna go back, every time I hear this song I'm taken back to that horrible feeling of first day @ school, feels good now !!!!!

XTC were, and always will be, a class act . Up there with the best. One of the greatest, misunderstood groups of all time . And I love them !!!!!!!!!!!

Something tells me that beginning bit (and throughout the song) was influenced by Middle Eastern music
