Yeah, I could see it being somewhat normal that long ago. I'm 24, and I don't ever remember them playing/displaying anything worth a damn. But glad to hear that it changes from place to place. It's amazing what one good band will do, and open up the door to an entirely new world of music =D

They used to...I'm almost 29 now, but when I was 16-17, sometimes the employees played really cool stuff. I had a similar experience to Ganjacide. I heard Funker Vogt in Hot Topic eons ago. Not even a full minute of the song played before I asked what he was playing. I stopped by the music store immediately afterwards and bought my first Funker Vogt CD. It opened up a new world of music for me.
