@Judd Romano, Rizal is not a coward. The man died for this country. Ano pa ba hinihingi mo? Rizal could have stayed in Hongkong or Europe if he is indeed a coward and a quitter like you picture him to be but he did not remain in those places. He returned in this country to continue fighting for his cause making himself very vulnerable. And even on the moment of truth, Rizal faced his death with a normal pulse, proving that he is not a coward. As to your allegation that Rizal never called for independence, you are mistaken. If Rizal’s only goal is assimilation and not independence, why the Spanish Colonial Government killed him? Surely, the Spaniards know the difference between assimilation and independence. The cruel action of the colonial government against Rizal only shows that Rizal’s work is a threat to their rule in the Philippines. Rizal clearly advocates for independence. The idea of independence permeates Rizal’s writings. In his letter to the Filipino people in 1892 this is what he said:“I HAVE ALWAYS LOVE MY POOR COUNTRY, AND I AM SURE I SHALL LOVE HER TO THE LAST MOMENT, even though men are perhaps unjust to me; my future, my life, my joys – all these I have sacrificed for my love of her. WHATEVER MY FATE MAY BE, I SHALL DIE BLESSING HER AND LONGING FOR THE DAWN OF HER REDEMPTION.” Rizal wanted his country to be free but he knows that such notion cannot happen overnight. So he worked for reforms: better education, more rights, etc. If Filipinos are better educated and know their rights, they cannot be enslaved forever. Independence will sooner or later come. According to Prof. Floro Quibuyen, the call for reforms is not mutually exclusive with separatism, the former being just tactics in achieving a broader prospect which is independence.

@ isidro noe, Bonifacio is not pure blooded contrary to your claims. His mother is a MESTIZA born of a Spanish father and a Filipino-Chinese mother. Being a Filipino does not entirely depend on the pureness of one’s bloodline. An important part of being a Filipino is how you live your life, if you embodied the Filipino spirit and values. Rizal’s whole life more than confirmed that he is a true Filipino. He literally gave his all for this country: his youth, intellect, career, ambitions, happiness, and even his life. Rizal is a true Filipino, the First Filipino as Guerrero puts it.

But then again, even without the intervention of the Americans, Rizal would still be our worth hero. Despite his feeling of unworthiness to be called our own hero, understanding his legacy would somewhat convince to call him one.

I did not mean to say that he wasn't a hero, I meant to say is that he does not deserve to be THE hero or the symbol of the heroism of the Philippines. Why would I be a hypocrite? I am not a Filipino citizen anymore. But even if I am, please don't discriminate just because I dont speak your language. I have pride on having a filipino blood but i detest the government system, my family experienced the depth of REAL evil in the corrupted system 1st hand. Thats why we migrated.

Agree! There is a saying: "Heroes are cowards who got cornered." Not to demean Rizal, he is a great person, but I too believe he doesn't deserve the title of national hero. He is an intellectual, no doubt about that, but he was a womanizer and a quitter. He never called for independence, he called for reform, his vision was to make the Philippines a province of Spain instead of just a colony. But I'm here to listen to Wolfgang, not discuss history... Weee!
