Whitney exercised great control and restraint here. I'm sure she could have blown the rafters off with the song- but she was emotive- focusing on communication and emotion as apposed to screaming and screeching. This after performing the third of three two-hour shows- this was the final performance of those three stadium events! EXCELLENT PERFORMANCE.

The thing is: who cares who did it better. I love Stephanie and Diana, and they both have amazing renditions of this song. But this performances and what it meant to be able to do this song in South Africa for Whitney - can no one feel the authentic joy she is feeling as she sings this song??? I actually like this one much better than her Merv Griffin performance, because her interpretation of the lyrics is transcendent. She seems to have a deeper and richer understanding of the words. And - this is what sets her apart - she conveys that understanding to her audience. I don't really care anymore whether or not she was high during this performance. It is beautiful. The crowd's reception is a testament. There was obviously such a connection there. When any of you naysayers meets an historical world figure and performs such a difficult song (and a BEAUTIFUL concert) this beautifully before tens of thousands of eager fans coming to see YOU in the country that the world figure will one day become president of, then then come back to me and tell me how effortlessly you were able to do it.

Whitney Houston is one of the best that's ever done it and I love her voice always have,no excuses necessary at this time in her career she was doing drugs she was well off into it.So please don't make excuses for her even if she wasn't high on drugs it wouldn't have made a difference nobody will ever sing this song like Stephanie Mills and that's that nobody,this song was made for her and nobody can come close too her performance.
