I had no idea what this song was about until I saw the performance of "By My Side" and then it hit me like lightning. It takes a true artist to translate such painful tragedy so beautifully.

This is one of "those songs." I can imagine the look on the faces of the record company execs and the artists to whom this song was pitched when they first heard it.

In the chorus, the Brad Paisley version says "He put that bottle to his head and pulled the trigger, and finally drank away her memory." The original version says "finally blew away her memory."

Haunting and powerful as with Brad and Alison version both are very sobering indeed.

What word (words) were changed in the Brad Paisley version? Such a powerful song... we actually experienced a Whiskey Lullaby in our little AA group. When Bill Anderson and a couple of singers on TV joked about writing a double suicide song , I wrote him to please don't joke about such a serious topic. He wrote back a real nice letter. BTW: When it comes to suicides, AA has a saying that helps in most cases when you are looking for explanation... "BUT FOR THE GRACE OF GOD, GO I."

Praisley and Krauss' version is awesome, but the fact that this song was written by Randall about himself gives him the heart to put all his feelings into his singing.
