I was 12 when this song came out and I used to believe that this was the saddest song ever. I cry whenever I hear it.

Everyone is saying 'oh this version is better' and 'no this is better' how about you just listen to the version you like and shut up in the comments about what you like better because staying silent is better than sounding ignorant. And while I agree with the original being better that's because that's my personal preference. I only think that its better because its the original and the original version of a song 9 times out of 10 sounds much better and has more soul and feeling in it. But like I said prior that's my opinion and while everyone is entitled to their own opinion you don't have to go shouting it.

All these people complaining that the Bastille version's better, you gotta understand what that emotional somber tone does compared to this "more upbeat" original. The cover version's somber tone from the context of Bastille makes sense because it's from the perspective of some middle class bloke talking to a stripper, he's gonna see her story as exceptional, as particularly heartbreaking because he "can't even relate" to the stuff she's been through and she's right because he's not only a man but also someone who's stable enough to not be in a community where this story is more common. The tone underscores the class divide where Bastille would be living in a world oblivious to how this story is not exceptional. In contrast the original has a faster rhythm, is more "mundane" in sound because the person she's talking to is from her community and to someone who is used to knowing girls who had to become strippers to support themselves by virtue of being from a poor/working class community (e.g. the friend saying he knows "this mad shawty goin through the same thing"). There isn't the class divide, she's talking to someone who's on a similar level to her when it comes to broad economic class ("gurl I know if my motha could do it then baby you could do it"), except her experience is gendered in a way he wouldn't have experienced. The original has a guy who "can't even relate" because he's not a woman. That's what makes this version so much more contextually relevant that a lot of people seem to be missing. I don't think Bastille did it the wrong way but he did it in a way that would fit his broader middle class audience who wouldn't be seeing these stories as something they hear from friends or friends of friends. City High tho, they're singing about their people and that's what makes it powerful
