Toni Fisher's top 40 hit of July 1962 was titled West of the Wall, It reached #1 in Australia for 4 weeks(a big hit) ,but only #39 in the US ??? . A song that shows how strongly music often has reflected the political events of the times.

Toni sang of the sadness of lovers separated by the Berlin Wall which divided Germany from 1961 to 1989.

" West Of The Wall "

Written by W. Shanklin

West of the wall I'll wait for you

West of the wall our dreams can all come true

Though we're apart a little while

My heart will wait until we both can smile

That wall built of our sorrow

We know must have an end

Till then dream of tomorrow

When we meet again

West of the wall where hearts are free

West of the wall your heart can come to me

And in my arms that hold you tight

You will forget the darkness of the night

The world knows about sadness and we are not alone

West of the wall that soon will fall and you'll come home

[Wall built upon sorrow

One day you will end

Hearts true to each other

Will not break

They will not bend

In our hour of sadness

How clearly we can see

Tomorrow's gladness

Free, free, free, free........]

[Repeat verse 2]

Come home

[West of the wall]

I only heard about this song because of DJ RODNEY BINGENHEIMER-who was recently interviewed on Norwegian radio. I had no idea this song existed;I thought TONI FISHER was of course famous for that one song with the "phasing" effect,The Big Hurt. Hmmm.....why did she record this song??

This is a beautiful song that I vividly remember being played on my local radio station in Bendigo, Australia. Thanks for posting it.

In August 1961 President Kennedy activated to Federal full time service the National Guard units of Wisconsin and Texas. I was a spanking new member of the Wisconsin Guard at that time. In March 1990 I was in Berlin arriving there by train in the East Sector from Poland where I had been visiting. My son was with me and we crossed over to the West through "Checkpoint Charlie", famous for its prisoner exchanges with the Russians. One could say I have a personal history with this wall and I was fortunate to have gotten a chunk of it from in front of the Brandenburg Gate.

I was 14 when this song came out and I bought the record. So happy to hear it again. Unfortunately I do tear up listening to it and remembering watching on TV that terrible era for the Berliners.

"Ich bin ein Berliner" spoketh President John Fitzgerald Kennedy, son of Rose Fitzgerald and Joseph Kennedy, on June 26th, 1963. He, who spoke of Peace and the re-unification of East Berlin/Germany and West Berlin/Germany, was killed, only a few months after that moving speech. People who tried to scale that wall, or tunnel under it, if caught, were killed. Many, however did make it to freedom. Enter Toni Fisher with her recording, "West of the Wall." Fast forward to President Reagan's reign, when he said, "President Gorbachev, tear down this wall," and, at long last, Germany was re-united. Angela.

The record came out when I was at the University of Missouri at Columbia. Very big in the gathering spots but it was not played on radio and I think that was the case in much of the country. Conceived by Fisher's producer Wayne Shanklin, who also came up with her #1 classic "The Big Hurt." Shanklin was a visionary and did his best with his small independent labels but had Fisher been on a major label she likely would have had a much bigger and longer sustaining record career.
