We know it's wrong to let this fire burn between us

We've got to stop this wild desire in you and in me

So we'll let the flame burn once again until the thrill is gone

Then we'll sweep out the ashes in the morning

We're two people caught up in the flame that has to die out soon

I didn't mean to start this fire and neither did you

So tonight when you hold me tight we'll let the fire burn on

And we'll sweep out the ashes in the morning

(solo dobro & pedal steel)

Each time we meet we both agree that it's for the last time

But out of your arms I'm out of my mind

So we'll taste the thrill of stolen love tonight until the dawning

And we'll sweep out the ashes in the morning

We're two people caught up in the flame that has to die out soon

I didn't mean to start this fire and neither did you

So tonight when you hold me tight we'll let the fire burn on

And we'll sweep out the ashes in the morning

Yes we'll taste the thrill of stolen love tonight until the dawning

And we'll sweep out the ashes

We'll sweep out the ashes

We'll sweep out the ashes in the morning

This is perhaps my favorite Gram Parsons song. Anyone who has loved someone society and religion has said they shouldn't love knows that stolen love is often the warmest.

This is such a great song. It does seem to sum up what happened between Emmy Lou and Gram Parsons but I am guessing it did not. Truth is sometimes greater than fiction. Emmy Lou now says they meant something to one another and clearly she was heartbroken when he died. "From Boulder to Birmingham" is the most heart-felt requiem in pop to anyone but I still think they were still friends at this point.

I love Gram's voice in this one ... well , I guess in every one , but he's especially good in this one . Emmylou looks so beautiful in this picture , and sounds just as beautiful . They are my favorite duo of all time . Thanks for posting .
