Ween - The Argus, from the album "Quebec"

Lyrics:

Yesterday we lost our lives, tomorrow we were born

Fortune smiled upon us, sacrifice the Argus

All that he might help us see

Magna eyes the track for miles

Looking for disease

Puzzled by the mountains

Tricked by the sea

And the Argus is practiced compassion

With an eye on you, as one is on me

Will the god eye grant his forgiveness

And allow he that's lived a reason to see

Counting days and building walls, bells ring so to warn

All the signs that guide us, chosen by the Argus

Tell me he has chosen you

Led by form we'll shed our soul

Trusting like a child

See the dark face that saved us

Drink from his empty eyes

And the Argus is practiced compassion

With an eye on you, as one is on me

Will the god eye grant his forgiveness

Letting droplets of light erupt from the sea

Lying in beds of garlic and orchids

He closes an eye, which closes another

And in sleep he dreams of watching and looking

And feather clouds dancing he curls up his lid and sleeps

Swirling with visions on man's confusion

All of the work done just to appease him

The Argus he cries, though love has it's place in the sun

It's only man's fear that carries him on

This comment will be buried beneath a sea of comments soon but this song is very special to me, it reminds me of of my late cousin. He loved this song and we played it at his funeral. I love Ween as did he.

no, its about an argus......an ancient mythical bird (not unlike a peacock) who see's all and protects sailors who choose to make a blood sacrifice in its name.

Maybe this will double post, but again, a "modicum" of intellect? Care to hazard your own theory?

You are obviously of a modicum of, if not great, intellect.

Clever picture since the Argus (bird) was named after the (mythological) Argus due to the "100 eyes" on his its tail.

I think this song's about what drives humankind forward. What protects people from giving up despite pain and confusion. The Argus was a 100 eyed sentinel in Greek mythology. Here it's a metaphor for whatever it is that keeps people going. In the chorus it's suggested the argus is love, but the song actually ends quite grimly, i.e "it's only man's fear that carries him on". Implying that if there is a force guarding against despair(a real life argus) it's fear, not love.

The bird is actually called argus, after the mythical giant.
