In the RPG Traveller I have a Cruiser that is named ISS Thunder Child. on the ship's coat of arms is the motto "Defense of the innocent, No matter the cost."

Strange how the two War of The Worlds movies (and Independence Day - which is pretty much the same thing), have the Martians as invulnerable. In the book a number of Martians are destroyed, two by Thunderchild and several by artillery

The Earth belonged to the Martians. That line used to creep my girlfriend out so I would put it in a random spot on mix tapes I made her lol.

Worlds worst youtuber.

This is the bit I find a bit odd.1 artillery battery, about 1000 men and 1 ship down and the whole world surrenders? Especially considering this was the time of great empires. British, French, German, America was quite strong, Japan had just emerged as a world power. Surely the fight would continue?

One of the things I envisioned while reading this book were desperate attempts to stifle the advance of the martians not by the military, but by individuals. I envisioned people strapping explosives to themselves, then running into the path of the advancing martians. I also envisioned people setting traps, kinda like the Ewoks did in Return of the Jedi. Imagine a wrecking ball getting a good starting swing and crashing into one of the martian tripods. I thought this sort of thing would have worked, even for the 1950's, and 2005 spin on the martians.

the first torpedo made was in 1866 but i dought that thunder child was a torpedo trawller cause when it said a fighting machine crashed down think how hard it will be to hit it with a torpedo as you would only be able to hit the legs.

I still think that in the movie, they should have at least had a destroyer like an Arleigh-burke class named USS Thunder Child to battle against the tripods in the ferry scene. They had the mass crowds, the panicking evacuation, the refugee ship, three tripods. AND NO THUNDER CHILD. WTF

When I first heard this album back in the day the victorious" Huuuullllaaaaaa!" at the end of Thunder Child sent shivers down my spine.Magnificent album. One of my all time favourites of all time (",)

I think the part I love the most about this link is that it's done by a Runescape fan.

When I was a child, this story enthralled me. My mother had it on record and on CD, and it was the source of an irrational childhood fear I still carry with me to this day (Now almost 22 years old). Thunderchild affected me most I think. Because even when I knew how the story went, I was cheering for thunderchild to succeed, I hoped the story might be a little different or something. God how I love this story. (Gives me a paranoia about being watched, makes me check my window to make sure there are no tripods outside. When I'm outside at night, I watch mars like a hawk, to make sure there are no green flashes)For those of you suggesting nukes... (skimmed the comments) Its set before they were even invented. As for other ships. Thunderchild was a symbolic thing... Like the eagle is symbolic with america's freedom ideals. Thunderchild was meant to stand as this mighty metal warbeast capable of felling our enemies when all else had failed. It was a symbol of the final hope of humanity, when it went down, so did all hope of winning against the martians...absolutely in love with this story...
