The ketchup running over her face adds nothing to the scene. And then, she spreads it all over with her hand, down to her throat.It does not cheapen her acting, but it makes it look pretty ridiculous to us New Yorkers, a kind of melodramatic touch, as in the French "Grand Guignol", where they liked to use this kind of graphic gory touches, showing the bloody and macabre bits on stage.It's surprising that Barenboim fell for this gimmick. But perhaps he had no say in it, all depending on the stage director at the Scala.
