Many opinions have been voiced here, so here's mine. Terfel is exceptional elsewhere, but I prefer a weightier voice for Wotan. Anyone heard of Ferdinand Frantz? His voice and interpretation are sensational in the role. Also Hans Hotter, Donald McIntyre and James Morris give definitive interpretations (I admit that I have to revisit Thomas Stewart's recordings, but I seem to remember him shining in Die Walkuere).

Lol I hate how people think there should only be one version of somethingGreat singing, fantastic modern performance, fans of opera should be jovial that such a beautiful and old art is still alive and kicking with newer perfomances, not whining because it isn't like the older onesWe should enjoy both for being what we love

I like Bryn Terfel fine - have several of his recordings plus DVDs where he is a very good Scarpia and devil in "Faust." But if you think he has the voice for Wotan, I think you're fooling yourself. Instead of a bass-baritone he sounds here more like a baritone-tenor. And that just doesn't work - a voice with much more gravitas is needed. Morris was superior as was Donald McIntyre and John Tomlinson.

I'm not sure why anyone thinks Bryn is not Wotan. Chacun a son gout, but in 50 years (yes, I was hooked on the Solti recordings at age 10) this is the first Wotan on recording or in the live opera house who has made be feel Wotan's anguish at his lack of freedom, or the masculine brio that you would expect of someone who keeps !fathering! people by different mothers. For once, he is not (cf Anna Russell) "the head god and a crashing bore."

Terfel has a good voice but he is no Wotan. He is unable to manage the German language well. What exactly does he say after Meine Speeres Spitze....? It should be "fuerchtet", but it's a non-German mumble of some kind. Check him out against the Wotan "sing offs" on you tube or listen to a real Wotan .........Rene Pape.

Oh my god I'm so tired of hearing people criticize the new Met production of the Ring. I saw it live at the Met and I thought it was really effective. James Morris remains my favorite Wotan but Bryn Terfel did a great job too. No need to compare those two, as they are very different singers.

Terfel is not made for that part

I agree with your point, the music is the best special effect there is to create a scenary for the ring cycle. Altough the visual stimulation is more than welcome! Still, this moving stage feels much too unnatural. And yes, this machine has proven to be risky, as Voigt actually fell from it during a live performance. She recovered almost instantly though, which is good, but it could have been a serious injury.

In a friendly exchange of opinions, I must say I disagree. I for one get deeply disturbed when people begin to clap without allowing the music time to get to a closure. It breaks several different elements of sentiment and immersion, and can make nearly the whole performance pointless. It takes away the feeling of satisfaction that an ending such as this one -and many others- create.
