This song could probably best be labeled "Americana". Like most of my songs, I don't know where it came from. I'm not sure how or why I wrote it, it just popped into my head. But I will say this... it took me about 30 takes to record the last verse because for reasons I don't fully understand, I can not sing this song without crying. It's very odd.

Credits:

Aurelio Voltaire- Vocals/Guitar

Brian Viglione- Drums

David J.- Bass

Melora Creager- Cello

Franz Nicolay- Accordion

Lyrics:

Well, the days are long and the work is hard

When your childhood is spent in the fields

And summer seemed to last million years

One day when I was just a boy

During one of those hot summer swells

The locusts were silenced by the clanging of bells

And there was the thing for which I longed

A place where I belonged

Where I first held the hand of the one I loved

When the circus came to town

We ate candy-corns and corn dogs

Cotton candy and candy-canes

And we shared a caramel apple by the arcade

And when night fell and the stars rose

And light bedazzled the fair

We rode the Ferris wheel

Up into the air

And there was the thing for which I longed

A place where I belonged

Where I first held the hand of the one I loved

When the circus came to town

And later, in the funhouse,

Our bodies looked so strange

And the mirrors made our faces seemed deranged

And the snake-man in the freak-show

He got you so alarmed

That you ran and ran and ran

Right into my arms

Oh, oh, oh

The next morning I got up

Wrapped my clothes up into a ball

And I ran and ran to run away with the fair

But when I arrived, to my surprise,

All the tents and wagons were gone

And they'd stolen all that happiness from the air

And gone was the thing for which I longed

That place where I belonged

Where I last held the hand of the one I loved

When the circus came

When the circus came

When the circus came to town

Fuckdammit, every single song prior to this one is entertainingly funny or stupid. This last song is such a depressing end to what was basically a comedy album. An amazing song, one that I love listening to and relistening to, but I don't think it really fits the rest of the album.

I'm crying so hard. It's tough to have everything you love so much with all your heart just ceases to exist. Gone. With not even a trace. Like it was never even real in the first place. And your heart has gone with it too.

Do you ever play this song at concerts? I can never find a live version of this song no matter how hard I try. I would love to hear a live version of this since it's my favorite of yours so far, so I was just wondering if you ever play it live or if you would?

This song was very good. But now I'm sad and I don't feel like working anymore... Plus it's the last one of the album...

When I listen to "When The Circus Came To Town" now I think of "The Night Circus" by Erin Morgenstern, and one part in the book comes to my mind. When Baily first visited the circus and finally got to meet Poppet. But if I put that away, this song is simply beautiful on its own!

Alienate? Outcasts? Those words mean nothing to Voltaire and it should mean nothing to all! I agree with you man!

Voltaire I would just like to tell you that you are an amazing artist and I click on ads pretty much every time they show up on your channel. Though it's probably not much I must have clicked enough to pay for a soda. Remember that that I effectively payed for that soda through a confusing system of advertising and shares that eventually give you about 5 cents for every 10 dollar youtube makes.

No I mean, Grim and Evil was the first thing before they started to rename the show Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy. Because CN reasons really, i know the story behind it already, it's just I like to recall things from how it was before they changed the TV show's name. xD

It was originally called grim and evil.
