I definitely think this version is better than The Cures', his voice isn't anywhere near whiny sounding as the others and it's by far more in the moment "I love you sounding" and less post break up "come back to me baby because I love you... wahhh" sounding. My fiance' recommended we play this at our wedding & I must say that I will surely be giving the DJ this version to play!

Does Voltaire happen to have more cover songs out? I've been listening to him for years but just barely came across this The Cure cover. This is really awesome though! It be really cool if he had more covers like this!

Isn't the main diffrence this is a more seirous cover and the original is portrayed with irony while voltaire shows the true sadness of the songs nature beyond its irony allowing the sorrow behind the lyrics to show through

I have to say I like The Cure's version better. I just think that the different mix of instruments does a lot better than purely strings, and I like the voice better for the lyrics and passion. Voltaire does a good job, but I just think nothing can compare to the original.

Ah, yes, a nice polite discussion. As Kerem said, "To each his own." I noticed that the two versions each have a distinctly different feel to them due to the instrumentation, sound balance, pitch/depth of percussion, and the tone of the singer's voice. To me, The Cure's version felt more "clean" in sound and had more energy and -I hesitate to say- a sense of spunk, while Voltaire's version sounds more melodic and resonant. Ultimately, it's a matter of the listener's individual tastes.

Voltaire don't sing "If I only were a Goth", I's by ThouShaltNot, Voltaire himself clarified that confusion.
